I stared while Nova followed Celesta to the restroom. Toven’s hearty chuckle made me snap my head around.

“You’re in deep, my friend,” he said, swirling the liquid in his cup.

“I don’t have any idea what you’re talking about,” I snapped.

“I tried to live in Egypt too for a while.”

“What the hell are you rambling about? I don’t want to live in Egypt,” I griped, stuffing a forkful of pancake into my mouth.

“I’m talking about the biggest river in Egypt, the Nile. You’re in denial about your feelings.” He held up his hand when I opened my mouth to protest. “I understand your hesitation. And you’ll get no judgment from me. When I met Celesta, I was immediately drawn to her. I wanted her in a way I didn’t understand, still don’t. I argued that I was too old and she was too young. That I was too dark while she was too light. That I would corrupt and ruin her. But I finally came to the realization that there is nothing rational about love and arguing with your heart just might cheat you out of something amazing,” Toven said in a quiet tone.

I hated that he saw me and my feelings so clearly. It was so frustrating. Because it was a lot harder to pretend there was nothing when someone else was able to see it so clearly.

“I’m just saying, I’m here if you need to talk. I’ve been almost exactly where you are.”

I nodded in thanks as the ladies returned to the table. I watched as Toven and Celesta seemed to carry on a mental conversation. After a while, he sent me a sympathetic look.

The rest of brunch passed with smiles and laughter. It seemed Nova had found a new friend in Celesta, and the two of them exchanged numbers before we left.

Nova and I strolled the neighborhood for a bit, stopping in a few shops along the way. I enlisted her help with picking out Christmas gifts for Jess and Sadie, and Nova got something for Alexis too.

Midafternoon, I steered her to a park bench and sat next to her. “Shall we go by your home today?”

The joy that had been in her eyes all day drained away. She sucked in a big gulp of air and gave a tight nod.

“It’s not going to ever be easy, is it?” she whispered, her beautiful eyes peering intently at me.

“I don’t think so.” I tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “I wish I could make it painless for you.”

She leaned against my shoulder. “I know.”

I allowed her to just be until she was ready. Eventually, she was, so I hailed us a cab and directed it to drive us straight to her old address.

When we arrived, I stepped out onto the sidewalk, then reached in to help Nova. Her fingers trembled against my palm. Once she was next to me, I continued to hold her hand in mine, though the temptation to haul her closer and sip at her pouty lips was great.
